Half the Songbook: A 60-Second Film About Being New

Our other short films point at things you can click: a 3D pyramid, a library of books and talks. This one points at something you cannot. It is sixty seconds about the worst hour of being the new kid, and the small gesture that ends it.

The story

Emma is starting at a new school. New faces, new hallways, not one familiar friend. Lunch alone feels like the longest hour of the day. Then, at morning chapel, the girl beside her slides her songbook over so both of them can see the page. Half a songbook becomes a shared lunch table, and a shared table becomes friends.

The film ends a few weeks later, when another new student walks in. This time it is Emma who moves over.

Why we filmed a songbook instead of a program

The film opens on a verse, John 13:34, love one another. Chapel is part of every week at SHA, and this is what we want it to produce: not a memorized line, but a hand that moves a songbook sideways without being asked. Kindness here is something students watch, receive, and then hand on.

Emma and her classmates are AI-generated, and the end card says so, the same disclosure we put on every film in this series. What they act out is not invented. In a school with classes of 10–15, a student eating alone is visible, to teachers and to the kids around her, and that visibility is most of the battle.

If your family is the new family

Many of our students arrived mid-stream: a move, a school change, a first year in America. The questions parents bring to a campus visit are rarely about curriculum first. They are about this film's first thirty seconds: will anyone sit with my kid? That question deserves more than an answer in the abstract.
