AI Quests: A Google and Stanford Game, Now in Our Classrooms
Practical guidance from the people who run the school — written to be useful whether or not you choose us.
Most tools that promise to teach children about AI fall into two buckets: slide decks with cartoon robots, or coding platforms that assume your child already wants to be a programmer. AI Quests is neither. It is a free, browser-based game built by Google Research together with the Stanford Accelerator for Learning, designed for students ages 11–14. Instead of explaining AI, it hands students the controls: they collect the data, train the model, and watch what their decisions do to the outcome. We are bringing it into our middle school AI program this year, and this post covers what it is and why we chose it.
What Students Do in the Game
In the first quest, students step into the role of a researcher helping a community prepare for floods. The scenario is fantasy, but the science underneath is not: it is built on Google's real flood-forecasting work, which sends early warnings to millions of people around the world today.
To succeed, a student has to make the same kinds of calls a real research team makes. Which data sources matter for predicting a flood: rainfall, river flow, soil, something else? Is this data reliable, or is it full of gaps? Once the model is trained, does it hold up in testing, and what happens to the villagers when it is wrong? An in-game mentor, Professor Skye, guides students along, and the game expects mistakes. Students can watch a badly trained model fail, figure out why, and go back and fix it.
Each quest ends with a recorded message from the actual Google researchers behind the work, talking about how they use AI responsibly in the real world. A second quest applies the same loop to preventing blindness through early screening.
Why a Game Beats a Lecture Here
Most teenagers meet AI as consumers. They type a question, something answers, and the whole system stays a black box. AI Quests flips the role: the student becomes the person who decides what data goes in, how the model gets tested, and whether it is good enough to trust.
That role reversal teaches the two ideas we most want middle schoolers to carry into an AI-saturated world. First, a model is only as good as the data and judgment behind it. Second, humans remain responsible for what AI systems do. A student who has trained a model on thin data and watched it mispredict a flood understands both ideas in a way no presentation can deliver.
Why We Picked This One
We say no to most AI classroom products. This one cleared our bar for a few concrete reasons:
- Students do the work. Collecting, cleaning, training, testing. It matches the rule we apply to everything in our AI and STEM program: if students are only watching, we are not interested.
- The science is real. The quests are drawn from published Google research that operates at global scale, and students hear from the researchers themselves.
- The age band fits. It was designed and play-tested for ages 11–14, which lines up with our middle school.
- Teachers get a full kit. Every quest ships with a lesson plan, pre- and post-game activities, and a teacher guide. No special AI background required to run a class.
- It is free, for everyone. No license, no accounts to purchase, nothing to install. Programs like Experience AI, built by Google DeepMind and the Raspberry Pi Foundation, are folding it into their own curriculum, and any school may do the same.
How It Fits What We Already Do
Our middle schoolers already build robots, fly drones, and make games. What AI Quests adds is the layer underneath: how a model is built, and why it behaves the way it does. A student who has debugged a robot and also trained a flood model starts to see the pattern common to both, and that pattern is worth more than either project alone.
Being a small school helps us here. There is no committee between a good tool and our classrooms. Our teachers can run a quest with a class of 10–15 students, see what the discussion looks like, and decide within weeks whether it stays in the rotation.
Try It at Home First
You do not need to wait for us. AI Quests is open to anyone at research.google/ai-quests, and a curious 11-year-old can play the flood quest in about a class period.
