04 Nov Thankful for Our Veterans

November is mostly known for Thanksgiving holiday celebrations, Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping, and the end of Daylight Savings Time when we all enjoy getting that extra hour of sleep.
But there is one other incredibly important holiday that we at South Hills Academy would encourage all our Eagles to remember this month. That holiday is Veterans Day.
Veterans Day occurs on November 11th every year in the United States in honor of the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” of 1918 that signaled the end of World War I, known as Armistice Day. In 1954, President Eisenhower changed the name to Veterans Day.
The military men and women who serve and protect the U.S. come from all walks of life; they are parents, children, grandparents, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and are an important part of their communities. Several of our own SHA family members are Veterans.
South Hills Academy will be honoring our Veterans with a special Veterans Day Chapel this Wednesday, November 9th, 8:30 am and following after with coffee and pastries. Thank you for your service to this country and for protecting our nation so that we have the freedom to learn, to worship, and to live.
In Flanders Fields
In Flanders Fields, the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
