K-8 Art Teacher

Position Summary

To provide an educational program that is Christ-centered and offers superior education academically, spiritually, and socially in a structured, positive environment.

 

Support the instructional process by supervising students in the classroom and other assigned areas; developing lesson plans, and delivering group or individual instruction within the established curriculum guidelines; collaborating with other teachers, other professional staff, and administrators in addressing instructional and/or classroom issues; and responding to a wide range of inquiries from students’ parents or guardians regarding the instructional program and student progress.

Supervision and Evaluation

The Middle School Classroom Teacher is under the immediate supervision of the site Principal and/or the Head of School.

General Guidelines

Follow school procedures and policies in administrative and educational matters that are set by the Board of Directors. The teacher is responsible for ensuring that these policies and procedures are carried out. Have the knowledge to teach Bible classes and Christian principles; lead students in prayer and nurture them to develop godly character.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

· Develop and teach skills and knowledge in one or more courses and/or grade levels utilizing course(s) of study adopted by the Board of Directors

· Collaborate with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents and a variety of community resources for the purpose of improving the overall quality of student outcomes and achieving established classroom objectives in support of the school improvement plan.

· Instruct students in citizenship, basic communication skills, and other general elements of the course of study specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of South Hills Academy.

· Maintain proper control and discipline in a positive manner by establishing good, wholesome rapport through healthy, human relationships between individuals involved in the learning processes and in accordance with school policy and procedure.

· Create an environment that fosters creativity and a positive self-image.

· Provides planned appropriate learning experiences in order to motivate students and appropriately utilize the available time for instruction.

· Communicate an understanding and appreciation of a democratic way of life.

· Evaluate students’ academic and social growth, keep appropriate records and prepare progress reports that communicate student achievement to parents/guardians.

· Perform basic attendance accounting and business services as required.

· Maintain professional competence through participation in staff development activities provided by SHA and/or self-selected professional growth activities.

· Identify pupil needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.

· Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and provide individualized and/or group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of pupils with varying abilities, attitudes, and cultural backgrounds.

· Demonstrates and differentiates methods required to perform classroom and/or subject-specific assignments for the purpose of providing an effective program that addresses individual student requirements.

· Create, with assistance from pupils, a functional and attractive environment for learning through displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.

· Select and requisition books, instructional aides, and instructional supplies and maintaining required inventory records.

· Assume responsibility for a reasonable amount of non-teaching activities such as directing extra-curricular work, teachers’ meetings, professional study, in-service training, curricula revision, student supervision, and other similar activities.

· Perform other specific duties as indicated by program/content area and grade level, or as directed by Principal and/or Head of School.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

· Participate cooperatively with the principal or Head of School to mutually develop the system by which the teacher will be evaluated in conformance with the school guidelines for evaluation and assessment.

· Select and requisition appropriate books, instructional materials, including audio-visual and multi-media materials, and supplies, and maintain required inventory records.

· Monitor students in a variety of educational environments – classroom, school grounds, hallways, restrooms, field trips, and assemblies – for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.

· Participates in curriculum and staff development programs within the school.

· Share in the sponsorship of student activities and participate in faculty committees.

· Report incidents – fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, harassment, zero-tolerance offenses – for the purpose of maintaining the personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment, and adhering to state law and board policies.

· Respond to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.

· Plan and help coordinate the work of instructional assistants, other paraprofessionals, parent volunteers, and school-age tutors.

· Administer group-standardized tests in accordance with South Hills Academy’s testing program.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

· Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

· Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

· Ability to work comfortably with students, staff, parents, and the community, from diverse backgrounds, while being responsive to their needs.

· Effective interpersonal, communication, conflict resolution, time management, and record-keeping skills.

· Knowledgeable about training in current approaches to teaching and structures for differentiated instruction.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Education: A Bachelor’s degree, including all courses needed to meet and maintain credential requirements.

2. Credential: An appropriate, valid, California State Teaching Credential to teach K-8 grades in a contained classroom.

3. Experience: A minimum of the completion of all student teaching required for the appropriate teaching credential.

4. Personal Characteristics: Appearance, grooming, and personality that establish a positive example for students.

5. Better than average recommendations from student teaching supervisor or other professionals who have observed the personal characteristics, scholastic achievement, and classroom performance of the teacher.
