18 Mar SHA Student Government Day

On March 1st, five (5) students from our very own South Hills Academy were presented with an opportunity to visit and explore West Covina’s city hall during their Student Government Day. Alongside our high school government teacher Mr. Carranza, the students who attended were Margaret Wu, Polina Solodukhina, Victoria Chun, Jocelyn Diaz, and Nicholas Swoboda. The purpose of Student Government Day was to bring local West Covina high school students together in one place to learn about the city government operations from both an elected official and staff perspectives!
During this day-long event, our students were able to experience different things that are related to local politics and policies. Some of the day’s activities included participating in a mock city council meeting in an official office, going on a tour of both the police station and city hall, and having conversations with the employees of the office.
West Covina city hall also posted pictures from the day of the event, and you are able to see our SHA students in a few of them!
Margaret mentioned that a highlight for her was being able to work alongside an employee that had the same role as her. She was able to learn so much and was even able to learn more about a career choice that she is interested in.
Some other playful highlights of the day included Nicholas arm-wrestling a firefighter, in which he was victorious, and Jocelyn enjoyed participating in a mock-up jail cell as a prisoner!
Our SHA family is very proud of our students for participating in this event and are excited to see how they will use this experience to further their growth as citizens. We look forward to sharing more opportunities like this with our SHA Eagles in the future!
