Biography
Hello! My name is Gabe Ferralez and I teach Elementary Math here at South Hills Academy. I graduated from University of California, Davis with a B.S. in Mathematics in 2019. I’ve always been enthusiastic about math and statistics, and am thankful for the opportunity to share my enthusiasm and skill set with such a great group of students. Prior to SHA, I worked as a math and science tutor at Rio Hondo College and a program manager at the non-profit organization MyGoodDeed.
I live with my wife Becca and our two kitty cats, Luna and Sasha. I feel very lucky to live in such a happy, loving home. My favorite things to do outside of work are listening to new records, going to concerts, and playing card games with my friends. I’ve also produced two weekly radio shows, one as a DJ and the other as an editor doing coverage of the Long Beach City Council.
I’m looking forward to a great year with you all!

Required materials

Workbooks will be sent home once or twice a week after the week’s pages have been graded. Students are responsible for returning the text to school everyday. Any pages before the most recent lesson not completed in class can be completed at home as additional practice.

Approximate expectations for assignments and assessments:
Names— Credit will not be given for assignments submitted without a name.
Tests— Independently done during class time. Students will have approx. 40 minutes to complete. Students should expect a test approximately every 5th class session, or about every other week. Per SHA policy, no study guides will be given.
Quizzes— Independently done during class time. Students will have approx. 10 minutes to complete. Students should expect a quiz approximately every 5th class session, or about every other week, alternating between test weeks.
Classwork— Done neatly and turned in on time.
Projects— Periodically we will work through projects that span several class sessions. Students will be expected to complete all parts of the project by their assigned checkpoint dates.
Homework— No homework will be assigned and graded for credit. I will periodically post recommended supplementary assignments in the “Resources” on Google Classroom for selected topics.
Parent Notification:
All grades will be available on ALMA. Weekly topics will be posted on Google Classroom and the SHA Newsletter. Copies of assignments graded for credit and supplementary materials will be posted on Google Classroom. Parents can email gferralez@michaelt293.sg-host.com for any questions regarding individual assignments or their student’s performance in class.
Late Work/Redo’s:
Late assignments will only be accepted for excused absences. Once a student returns, they will have as many days as they were out to make up their work. All tests and quizzes must be made up in-person afterschool between 3:30-4:30 pm.
SHA retest policy: Students must prove that steps have been taken to prepare, improve and grow from the experience that will allow an opportunity to re-do the test. Students must ask permission from the teacher to retake a test and it will be upon the discretion of the teacher to grant the request.
Steps to prove readiness for retakes in my class include corrections on previous work, and demonstrated practice of test topics. Repeated or habitual retakes will not be allowed.
Attendance/Tardiness:
All classes at South Hills Academy follow student handbook policies and guidelines.
Student Behavior Expectations:
All students are expected to help create an environment conducive to effective teaching and learning for all participants. Behavior that disrupts teaching and learning is unacceptable; accordingly, all face-to-face or online interaction should be civilized, respectful, and relevant to the topic.
Academic Integrity:
Honesty and integrity are integral components of the academic process. Students are expected to be honest and ethical at all times in their pursuit of academic goals in accordance with South Hill Academy.
Cell Phone Expectations:
No cell phones allowed. Smart watches may be worn but not used during class.
